The Association was fortunate in July to have the
opportunity to co-host with RTL Australia a public meeting in Canberra. The speaker
at this meeting was Lori Hougans a young, dynamic speaker from the States (see page 3).
Lori presented a refreshing approach to the abortion issue, as she showed in an interview
with 2CC Radio (06 July 1998). Calling for more work against abortion in the light
of the recent pro-abortion changes to Western Australia's law, she said, "I think
they need to look at this as a wake up call. What's happened in Western Australia of
course is tragic. But as we know, in Western Australia and in Canberra unborn
children have been dying for a long time on an unofficial basis, I guess you would
say. So its time for the people to snap out of it and to start moving to wake up
every morning and to understand that unborn children are dying and its time that we do
something about this."
This is the first time in a number of years that we have worked as equal partners in an
event with RTL Australia. The meeting was a success and we are looking forward to
more joint ventures with other organisations in the future. I believe that the
problems which have divided the pro-life movement in Australia in the past need to
be kept in the past, and that we should start focusing on the common ground we
share. A unified pro-life movement will be stronger and more effective force
in the work that we have ahead.

House Fund Raising -
Helpers Needed
Karinya House for Mothers and Babies is a unique new
housing service for women needing accommodation and support during their pregnancies.
Opened in Giralang on 3rd November last year, Karinya House has accommodated three women
since that time and has assisted many more in other ways.
Helpers are needed for its major annual fundraiser as Karinya depends on the proceeds for
its continued operation.
The raffle of a Holden Commodore from Commonwealth Motors begins on the 1st September and
runs for three months. The Karinya House committee is seeking volunteers who could
coordinate the selling of tickets in their parishes and/or assist with rosters for street
sales.
The Committee is also looking for volunteers with computer skills in Word and Excel to
assist with office work and volunteers with computerised bookkeeping (MYOB) skills to
assist the treasurer.
Karinya House for Mothers and Babies began as the vision of a small group of people who
saw an urgent need for a special house for women who are pregnant and in difficult
circumstances, being without appropriate accommodation and support during this vulnerable
time. Women are able to return to the house for continuing support for up to three
months following the birth of their baby.
