ACT Right to Life AssociationMEDIA RELEASE |
Spokesperson for the ACT Right to Life Association, Jeremy Stuparich, today criticised independent MLA Michael Moores latest attempt to introduce euthanasia to the ACT through the back door. Mr Moore is proposing that the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions be instructed to not prosecute doctors for administering a lethal injection to a patient, provided they follow Mr Moores guidelines.
"Michael Moores latest attempt on the euthanasia laws is so unlikely to succeed it can only be seen as a grab for publicity in the lead up to the ACT election.
"Michael Moore hasnt been able to convince the Assembly to pass his legislation, so it seems even less likely that the Assembly would approve legislation to take a back door approach to the issue by instructing the Director of Public Prosecutions not to prosecute cases of euthanasia," said Mr Stuparich.
"This is the latest in a long line of attempts by Mr Moore throughout the 1990s to introduce euthanasia to the ACT. Mr Moore failed to convince an ACT Legislative Assembly inquiry and the Commonwealth Parliament of the wisdom of euthanasia and has left a trail of failed bills in his path. Clearly, after reflecting on this issue, both Parliaments have rejected lethal injections as bad public policy."
