Executive Summary
- There were 1447 abortions performed in the ACT in the
financial year 2000-2001. This was 263 (15%) less than in 1999-2000.
- The ACT abortion rate in 2000-2001 was 19.3 per thousand
women of reproductive age (15-44 years), or one abortion for every 2.8 live births.
- Amongst teenage women, the abortion rate in 2000-2001 was
more than two abortions for every live birth, marginally lower than in 1999-2000.
- The highest abortion rate in the ACT was amongst women aged
20-24 years, though the birth rate was highest amongst women aged 25-34 years. This is
very similar to the situation in the previous year.
- The great majority of abortions in the ACT (95.7 percent)
were carried out by Family Planning ACT's abortion facility, Reproductive Healthcare
Services (RHS). This percentage is even higher than in 1999-2000 with RHS increasing its
market dominance by over 3 percent.
